IELTS Reading – Practice – Matching

TEXT
Our relatives, the primates, appear to be ambidextrous, or able to be both hands, although gorillas have heavier left arms seemingly due to greater utilization. Aristotle observed that crabs and lobsters had larger right claws. Rats are 80% dextral, yet polar bears are believed to be left-pawed. Flat fish provide interesting date: in northern seas plaice and sole have their eyes andcolor on the right side, but tropical halibut are the other way round. If this is to do with light and sun rotation, it may explain why Indian Ocean sole are reversed, but not why northern halibut are just as sinistral as their southern cousins. In the plant kingdom, honeysuckle is a rare example of a left-handed climber that twines anti-clockwise, or widdershins!
Although we live in a more tolerant age, not so long ago in the UK youngsters were forced to use their right hand, ‘to learn the value of conformity’ (A. N. Palmer), often resulting in the stuttering speech defects common in ‘switched sinistrals’ like George VI. In the 1950s the American psychiatrist Abram Blau accused left-handed children of infantile perversity and a stubborn refusal to accept dextrality.
Complete each sentence with the correct ending A-G
1.     Gorillas, unlike other primates
2.     Fish color and eye position
3.     Most plant climbers
4.     In the past some experts
 List of endings
A.     appear to have been against left-handedness.
B.     are usually the same in both hemispheres.
C.     are apparently not always dependent on hemisphere.
D.    seem to have difficulty using both hands.
E.     looked on left-handedness with indifference.
F.      tend to grow clockwise rather that anti-clockwise.
G.     seem to use their left-hand more.

IELTS READING – Practice – True/ False/ Not Given

Do the following statements agree with the information given in the paragraphs?
1.     Jurgen Tautz trained the insects in his experiment to recognize the shapes of individual numbers.
2.     Researchers have experimented by altering quantities of nectar of fruit available to certain wild animals.
3.     When assessing the number of eggs in their nest, coots take into account those of other birds.
Even more primitive organisms may share this ability. Entomologist Jurgen Tautz sent a group of bees down a corridor, at the end of which lay two chambers – one which contained sugar water, which contained sugar water, which like, while the other was empty. To test the bees’ numeracy, the team marked each chamber with a different number of geometrical shapes – between 2 and 6. The bees quickly learned to match the number of shapes with the correct chamber. Like the salamanders and fish, there was a limit to the bees’ mathematical prowess – they could differentiate up to 4 shapes, but failed with 5 or 6 shapes.
Why these skills evolved is not hard to image, since it would help most any animal forage for food. Animals on the prowl for sustenance must constantly decide which tree has the most fruit, or which patch of flowers will contain the most nectar. There are also other, less obvious, advantages of numeracy. In one compelling example, researchers in America found that female coots appear to calculate how many eggs they have laid – and add any in the nest laid by an intruder – before making any decisions about adding to them. Exactly how ancient these skills are is difficult to determine, however. Only by studying the numerical abilities of more and more creatures using standardized procedures can we hope to understand the basic preconditions for the evolution of number.

Text: Vitamin E, thought to improve cardiovascular health, was contraindicated in a study that demonstrated higher rates of congestive heart failure among such vitamin users.
Question: According to the writer, vitamin E has been shown to
A. lead to heart problems.
B. be good for heart health.
C. support the immune system.
D. have no effect.

Key: A
Explanation:
B. Trong bài chứa thông tin “vitamin E, thought to improve cardiovascular health, was contraindicated in a study……..” . Ta có heart health = cardiovascular health; be good for đối lập với thông tin “thought to improve……..was contraindicated…….” nên đây chính là 1 false option.
C. Không có thông tin về immune system nên lựa chọn này tương ứng với Not Given.
D. have no effect.
A. “……higher rates of congestive heart failure among such vitamin users.”

Question 2 bên dưới là 1 ví dụ. Nhìn lướt qua ta thấy lựa chọn B và C gần giống nhau, chỉ khác ở động từ increase và decrease, đáp án đúng chắc chắn sẽ là B hoặc C. Sử dụng kỹ năng scanning để tìm key words “decorder” và “accuracy” nằm ngay ở đoạn đầu của text và có thể thấy các thông tin là photograph someone is looking at with an accuracy of up to 90 percent, although the success rate falls as the total number of photographs being assessed increases …Như vậy đáp án đúng ở đây sẽ là C
Text: Tests of the decoder show that it can predict which photograph someone is looking at with an accuracy of up to 90 percent, although the success rate falls as the total number of photographs being assessed increases. The scientists believe that it might be possible in the near future to adopt the same approach in making a device that can read someone’s thoughts, although they warm against doing this surreptitiously or against someone’s will. ‘It is possible that decoding brain activity could have serious ethical and privacy implications downstream in, say, the 30 to 50 -year time frame. It is something I do care about,’ said Professor Jack Gallant of the University of California, Berkeley, who led the study published in the journal Nature.
Question:

1. The accuracy of the decorder
A.      remains constant as the volume of photographs increases.
B.      increases with the volume of photographs.
C.      decreases with the volume of photographs.
D.      fluctuates as the volume of photographs increases.
